Approaches utilized:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on modifying dysfunctional emotions, behaviors, and thoughts by uncovering negative or irrational beliefs. Considered a “solutions-oriented” form of talk therapy, CBT rests on the idea that thoughts and perceptions influence behavior.  CBT aims to identify harmful thoughts, assess whether they are an accurate depiction of reality, and, if they are not, employ strategies to challenge and overcome them.  CBT is appropriate for people of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. Evidence has mounted that CBT can address numerous conditions, such as major depressive disorder, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is a therapy method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings to find the internal motivation they need to change their behavior. It is a practical, short-term process that takes into consideration how difficult it is to make life changes.  This approach helps people become motivated to change the behaviors that are preventing them from making healthier choices. Research has shown that this intervention works well with individuals who start off unmotivated or unprepared for change.
